does the job
From Susan Davis-Geer of Columbus, Ohio on .
I bought my rice cooker back in 2009, and recently replaced the lid. What can I say, it's a lid? :-) It looks good, fits well, keeps the heat in and lets the steam escape as it should. The reason I had to replace it, is because of the handle design. The knob is attached to the glass with a screw. Occasionally water would be trapped between the knob and the glass and I would have to take it apart to clean it, and put it back together again afterwards. This probably contributed to its demise, because over time the screw fit less and less tightly until one day it could no longer be tightened, and the knob would just rotate when I tried. But the valiant little lid still did its job, loose knob notwithstanding. A week or two later, I went to put the lid on the pan and it fell apart. I was able to retrieve the pieces...the knob, the screw, the plastic housing for the screw....and used a spatter shield to cover the pot, and my rice came out fine. I was happy to find a replacement lid, because even though the original was imperfect, it worked fine for a decade, and frankly, I wish at my age that all my own body parts were as reliable as that lid was. I have found that glass lids in general are problematic, because water does tend to collect between the glass and the handle, and they do have to be disassembled from time to time. I prefer metal lids. But eleven years? I think many rice cookers themselves would need to be replaced after eleven years, and the cooker itself is still chugging away reliably....and we have rice every few days in this house. I am happy all I had to do was buy a new lid. This is why I give it four stars. I would give it five, were it not for the inconvenience of having to periodically take the thing apart to clean it. And I am sure this replacement lid will outlast my current rice cooker...which I also recommend, as the stainless steel liner is better than the non-stick liners that deteriorate and begin to peel after a few years. And on the subject of the cooker itself---I have model number ME81...I would like to pass on a handy tip. Rice does tend to stick to the bottom when it cooks. I add a bit of olive or sesame oil to minimize this-and it adds wonderful flavor-- but I have found if I put a little water in the dirty liner and let it soak for a while, the rice that stuck comes right off without a lot of scrubbing. You just have to be willing to let it sit in the sink for a bit.
